What's Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap insurance, is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill coverage gaps for beneficiaries enrolled in the Original Medicare Program—Medicare Parts A & B.

These policies help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. Insurance companies offer standardized Medigap plan types that provide different levels of coverage based on benefits mandated by law.

A Medicare Supplement policy can only be purchased if you’re enrolled in both Part A and Part B of Original Medicare. You can’t buy a Supplement policy if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (an HMO or PPO). However since that type of plan is designed to provide greater coverage and cost protection, you probably wouldn’t need them both anyway.

To understand Medicare Supplements a little better, here’s an overview of how a policy may benefit you:

Works with Original Medicare – Part A and B

Once you are enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, you may choose to supplement your coverage by purchasing a Medicare Supplement policy through a private insurance company.

Helps pay some of the out-of-pocket expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t

Medicare Supplements are designed to help with some of the costs associated with Original Medicare, like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Plans will vary but here are some examples:

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital deductible

  • Some Part B out-of-pocket costs and deductible

  • Blood transfusions

  • Additional hospital days after you've used up your Part A benefits

  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance

  • Part A hospice

Once you’re enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, you can apply for a Medicare Supplement at any time

Unlike your Medicare, there’s no Open Enrollment period to apply for a Medicare Supplement policy—you can apply any time. But if you choose to apply for a Medicare Supplement within 6 months of your 65th birthday and Medicare Part B enrollment, your acceptance is guaranteed regardless of health problems.

Guaranteed coverage…for life

As long as you continue to pay your monthly premiums, your Medicare Supplement is guaranteed to renew, regardless of age or health.

A choice of plans

Medicare Supplement insurance is federally standardized. Each of the plans offer the same basic benefits but some offer additional benefits, so you can choose based on your health needs and budget. For example, when shopping for a plan, you can compare one company's Plan F to another company's Plan F. The difference from one company to another could be better benefits, a higher level of service or brand reputation.

No network restrictions

With a Medicare supplement, you can continue to use your doctor, specialist or medical facility as long they accept Medicare patients.

Peace of mind when you’re away from home

Whether you’re at home in Beverly Hills, Florida or traveling in Beverly Hills, California, your Medicare Supplement insurance is with you if you need medical care. Some plans may even offer emergency benefits in foreign countries.

Works with Medicare Part D—Prescription drug plans

Adding a prescription drug plan to your Medicare Supplement is optional but depending on your health needs you can get more complete coverage. Medicare Part D plans are also offered through Medicare-approved private insurance companies.
